In Arabian Nights

arabA Review by Carolyn Dews

This book is one man’s very personal tour through  Morocco,  and  conveys its history through its storytellers.  Shah settled in Morocco with his wife and children.  He went on to write a book called ‘The Caliph’s House’ about the house he bought in Casablanca.  His home figures largely in ‘In Arabian Nights’ with its Jinns and guardians.  Shah goes in search of storytellers in Marrakesh and Casablanca who enthral  people with their teaching stories.  Shah’s  book  brings to life this rich vibrant country in all its technicolor glory.   I found the short stories to be clever and funny.

‘In Arabian Nights’  inspired me to go on to read the Penguin classic ‘The Thousand and One Nights’  translated by Dawood.
