We were honoured to have one of the world’s leading economists Professor John Kay add to the lustre of our ‘Meet The Author’ series at the Festival. John talked about his new book which has been garnering so much interest and publicity ‘Obliquity’. Whilst he used some examples from Economics, he ranged far and wide too talking about subjects as disparate as architecture and football to illustrate his overall theme which is that in this complex life of ours objectives are often best pursued indirectly. This, and his reluctance to believe any more in the efficacy of complicated models such as those used by The Treasury or weather forecasters, meant that he had to change the habits of a lifetime. The good audience were very taken by his ideas, if not always convinced they could be applied so widely but it was nice to interact with someone who has operated at such a high level. The book is for sale for a very reasonable £10.99 in both our shops.
