A Review By Carolyn Dews
I really enjoyed ‘The Red Tent’ and ‘Good Harbour’ also written by Anita Diamant. Although both these books are set in different periods of time and places they are about the relationships between women.
‘Day After Night’ is based on the true story of the October 1945 rescue of more than 200 prisoners from the Alit internment camp. The camp was a prison for illegal immigrants run by the British military near the Mediterranean coast north of Haifa. The story is told through the eyes of four young women at the camp. Shayndel, a Polish Zionist, Leonie, a Parisian beauty, Tedi, a Dutch Jew and Zorah, a concentration camp survivor. They are all haunted by unspeakable memories and find salvation in the bonds of friendship.
It is well worth reading.
