A Review By Ruth Hunter, BookTime Editor, Bertrams
This is a captivating narrative of interlocking stories which build into one mind-blowing novel. In each chapter, a minor character from a previous chapter becomes the narrator, or a new character narrates the story which involves characters from before. With themes such as the Holocaust, the enduring bond between mankind and animals, and the powers of the subconscious mind, although most of the stories are set in 1984, they range greatly in time and space. The breadth of the novel is augmented by the presence of one elusive figure, hunted by the authorities, who seems to have supernatural abilities. In places humorous, in others moving, it’s a remarkable achievement.
