A Review By Ruth Hunter, BookTime Editor, Bertrams
This is a different kind of thriller, in that the story is told not just from the point of view of the police, but also through the eyes of the main protagonists and suspects. Jason and Sandra Jones live a stable existence in Boston with their young daughter Ree, but then Sandra goes missing one night. The police suspect Jason, as there’s something very strange and distant about him. But there’s also a convicted sex offender living down the street. Gardner is adept at getting into all the characters’ minds and telling their stories, without giving too much away, so you are desperate to find out exactly what happened. You don’t know as you read their thoughts whether they are innocent or guilty, which adds a tension to every sentence.
